ADAMS OF SURRY CO.
The Adams family of Surry and Isle of Wight are descended from the Adams family of Devon, England according to records found in Surry Co., Va. This is proved by the following:
Book II, p. 198: 4 March 1678-9. Robert Kae, and Mary, his wife, of Upper Parish of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, for 30,000 lbs. of Tobacco paid by Robert Caufield, of Lawnes Creek Par. Surry Co., Va., sell 300 acres of land, part of 1,000 acres, granted to Roger Delk, deceased, land sold by Roger Delk (only son and heir of Roger Delk, and Rebecca his wife) to Capt. Thomas Adams, late of Isle of Wight, deceased, Nov. 1659, and by William Adams, of Kenton in County Devon in England, brother and heir to Capt. Thomas Adams, both in his own right and his sister Dorothy Pegraff of County of Devon, sold and conveyed to sd. Kae,, 10 March 1664, and residue to Roger Delke and Rebecka, his wife, 10 Nov. 1666, and deeds to said Caufield, Now delivered 4 March, 1678—9. signed Robert Kae, Mary Kae. Wit. Thos. Pittmann, Sr., Jno. Barnes, Robert Kae, Samuel Swann.
The mentioned William Adams, or one of that family was of Surry during this time also. They were probably ancestors of our Adams family. We shall begin with:
William Adams of Surry, in. Oct 13, 1795 by Nathaniel Berryman to Hannah Judkins (see Judkins family), daughter of John Judkins of Surry Co., Va. His will dated ____ mentions grand-daughters Elizabeth Adams and Rebecca Mary Adams. William C. Adams was guardian of Nancy Clements Adams and Patsey (Martha) Adams. Also, William C. Adams was the administrator of the will of Hannah Adams. Her will mentions also Gray E. Adams, who married Mary W. Clarke In Surry, Feb. 15, 1810, by Nathaniel Berryman. William and Hannah Adams had:

B. Nancy Clements Adams, in. Sept. 20, 1827 to Thomas Watkins Smith, by John Faulcon, Baptist Minister.

D. Martha R. Adams, a. 16 Mar 1830, by the Rev. James D. Edwards, a Methodist minister, to John L. Maynard. They lived in Southwarke Parish area of Surry Co according to the 1850 Census of Surry (no. 242). John was age 40 and Martha age 35 in 1850. Issue:
1. Robert W. Maynard, age 18 in 1850
2. Rebecca Maynard, age 12 in 1850
3. John C. Maynard, age 10 in 1850
4. Edward F. Maynard, age 6 in 1850
5. James H. Maynard, age 4 in 1850

E. William Clements Adams, b. in 1796 and died in the morning of September 9, 1873 in the hope of rest eternal.” He married on Sunday, March 28, 1824, in Norfolk, Va., by the Rev. William Wicks (Weeks) (of Christ Church?), to Mary Ann Dandridge Young, the daughter of The Rev. George Young and his wife Margaret Umphreys (see YOUNG family). William C. Adams was born in Surry Co., Va., and lived with his wife in that county, probably near Cabin Point, for a letter to her dau. gives that as the return address In Surry as of Sept. 1850. Mary Ann Dandridge Young was the last daughter of George and Margaret Young. She was born (the only child born in America) November 16, 1797 in Menokin House (the home of Richard Henry Lee), Richmond County, Virginia (while Young was serving in Lunenburg County), “between the hours of seven and eight o’clock in the evening.” She was baptized by the Rev. Mr. Sim (Symes) of Norfolk, Va., in Norfolk, on December 12, 1811. She died on the 14th (some notes say the 15th) of February, 1853 at the age of 55. They had issue:
1. Margaret Hannah Adams (probably named for the grandmothers) who was born August 23, 1825 between the hours of 8 and 9, and died on August 21, 1826.
2. Sarah Jane Adams, born February 4, 1828 and died August 13, 1829.
3. William Antony (Anthony) Adams, b. March 25, 1837 and baptized by the Rev. Mr. Northam. “had measles and whooping cough in 1843.”
4. Mary Anne Elizabeth Adams, who in. Timothy Eloodworth Baker (see Baker family for issue). She was b. April 5, 1832 and baptized by the Rev. Mr. Hedges. She “had the measles and whooping cough in 1843.” She died April 13, 1913.
5. Henry Wingfield Adams. He was born on April 8, 1835 and died on April 7, 1861. He was baptized by the Rev. John Henry Wingfleld April 8, 1836 and had the measles and whooping cough in 1843. It is said that because of an illness he traveled from state to state in search of mineral waters to cure his illness. He went to North Carolina in this search and in Goldsboro married Susan Hollan Green on October 20, 1859 in the home of the mother of Susan. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Mr. Fitzgerald. At the death of Henry Wingfield Adams, Susan Hollan Green Adams remarried to a Confederate Army officer, James Wharton Gulick of Goldsboro, N.C. Henry Adams had by Susan Green:
a. Mary Green Adams, born July 11, 1860 and baptized by the Rev. Mr. Hunter on April 2, 1861, five days before the death of her father. She married Thomas Allen Whitfield in 1887 and had issue:
(1) Diana Green Whitfield, in. Council Wooten Oliver. They lived in Mt. Olive, N.C. as of 1964; issue:
(a) Council Wooten Oliver, Jr. in. Claro Brown and had issue:
1. Rebecca Claro Oliver, in. Richard Stanley Ban.
ii. Council Wooten Oliver, III, in. Dixie Harrington.
(b) Mary Adams Oliver, married Dr. Daniel O’Connell Sayers and had issue:
i. Diana Abigail Sayers, m. Richard Rutherford

(c) Diana Green Oliver a. Muscoe Stotler Porter, Jr. and had issue:

James Wharton Gulick was born Jan 4, 1835 and died Nov 17, 1905. He is buried is Goldsboro, N.C. His wife Susan Hollon Green Adams was born March 11, 1836 and died Sept 5, 1900 and is also buried in Goldsboro, N.C. James Wharton Gulick was the son of
John Gulick, b. Aug 24, 1789, bapt Oct 12, 1792 and d. Dec 29, 1855 at Daniel Johnson’s home in Fayetteville, N.C. He in. On Jan 31, 1815 Margaret Young Wiley, b. Jan 14, 1796 and died Jan 27, 1844. She is buried in Princeton, N.J. James Wharton Guliok married Susan Hollon Green Adams on March 5, 1868. For issue, see GULICK’S of the USA by David E. Gulick, 1961.
6. George W. E. Adams, b. April 18, 1830 and died October 9, 1831.
7. Margaret Jane Adams, who was born June 29, 1839 and died around the age of 40. She married George Washington Lafayette Moody (see MOODY family) of Surry Co., Va., on October 12, 1858. He was the son of Blanks Moody and Rebecca Adams of Surry. He was born Feb 4, 1834 and died In Franklin, Va., on June 30, 1921 and is buried in John Flournoy Whitley’s plot in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Surry Courthouse, Va, The marriage was performed by the Rev. Robert Berryman of Surry. George Washington Lafayette Moody as a member of Jefferson Lodge no 65 having become a Mason on June 12, 1855 at Burry Courthouse. He was at his death the oldest Mason in Virginia. He joined the Surry Light Artillery during the Civil War, with his brothers, in 1861 and served as a harness maker up to the surrender in 1865, having served the entire four years in Hankin’s Company, Surry Light Artillery, Col. C.E. Lightfoot’s Battalion, Pickett’s Brigade. Margaret Jane Adams, his wife, had measles and whooping cough in 1853. For their issue, see MOODY family.
